Its longevity and popularity as an aesthetic are particularly fascinating! So what is steampunk? In its most simple and classic form, it’s an aesthetic built on concepts of what society would have been like if we’d relied on steam power as our primary energy source. Visually, the aesthetic has historically relied on fashion and design choices from the Victorian and American Wild West-eras, but with mechanical modifications. Think of it as alternate history with sci-fi influences. Having said that, many fans of the genre have branched out to different visual styles and created genre-appropriate works that also include influences from East Asia, the American Civil War, post-apocalyptic settings, and more.
